A Home Stereo System
Is More Than Just A Radio!

So you're thinking about having a Home Stereo System instead of a traditional juke box?

There is certainly nothing wrong with that. In our opinion the quality and selection is far superior than the traditional juke box. For example this Sharper Image ZipConnect CD Stereo QUATTRO Impressive four-CD stereo with towering, aluminum-cone sound! (SA265) would LOOK GREAT & SOUND GREAT in your rec room or game room!

I do love the traditional juke box in the game room, but if you could have both a juke box and a Home Stereo System then you'd have the best of both worlds.

Basically There Are Three Choices

Which you choose really depends on how much you want to spend. If you're looking for an affordable home audio system just remember: The more you spend the better the quality of the system.

Still there is so much more involved than just the basic ideas below. These are just to get you thinking about which Home Stereo System you may prefer.

Book Shelf System

The first Home Stereo System is the Book Shelf System. Also known as an Audio Shelf System or a Compact Stereo System.

The Book Shelf System is pretty basic. Still it's not as low down the ladder as the boom box. It's a little higher on the classy scale and is of better quality for the most part.

Basically the Book Shelf System holds 3 to 5 compact disks and has 2 speakers on either side of the main system. Sometimes you can get additional speakers. It may or may not have a tape deck but most likely has an am/fm tuner.

The selection you'll find goes from gaudy and cheap to classy and stylish. The classy Book Shelf System is probably the one you'd see in an office setting.

Overall it's not a bad idea to have a Bookshelf System in your game room. They are definately cheaper and with 5 CDs you won't have to change disks that much if at all.

Home CD Players / CD Changers

Home CD Players / CD Changers are way up the ladder from the Book Shelf System. You have companies like Pioneer, Sony, Panasonic, Bose and more who all compete in the CD Player business. CD Players/ Changers are more powerful than the Book Shelf System and usually have much better sound quality.

Also these days they can hold anywhere from 1 - 400 CDS.

There are three basic Home CD Players available.

  • Single Disk Players.

  • Multiple-Disk Changers. As the name suggests you can find ones that hold 3, 5, 6, 12, 24 or other quantities of CDs.

  • Mega Disk Changers. Can hold up to 400 CDs.

There are so many things to consider when buying a Home CD Player. What about the speakers? Some come with them and some don't. Then you have all the different sound qualities. Plus as technology improves daily so do the many different options.

For example some systems give you the ability to input text. That way you know the name of the song and artist while the CD is playing.

To are so many different options on each different CD Changer that there's too much to explain here. We'll have some links up soon where you can get more detailed information on each system.

Home Theatre Receiver / Surround Sound Receiver

Receivers are basically used to improve the quality of your listening experience. You input your audio system and then the Receiver outputs the sound to your speakers.

For example you can hook up a CD Player, Play Station 2 game system or just about any other audio system that has sound output right into the Receiver.

The Receiver will amplify and customize the sound quality, etc. Then you'll hear that awesome sound through your speaker system.

Again there are a lot of receivers out there to choose from. For example Sony, Pioneer, Yamaha, Denon and more. Do some research before choosing one to complete your Home Stereo System. The quality and options vary from model to model.

For example: Ask yourself the following questions.

  • Do I want or need surround sound? With surround you'll have a better listening experience.

  • How many audio devices do I intend to connect to the receiver at once? DVD, Digital TV, CD Player, Play Station, etc...

  • Does it have AM/FM channel presets? That way at the press of a button you're on your favorite station.

  • How many watts per channel do I want? 50 or 100? It'll make a difference in the sound quality.

You definately want to get the best home theatre receiver for your money. Think about everything you'll use it for and then do some detailed research.

Home Stereo System Decision Time

We hit upon the very basics of the 3 best home stereo systems for your game room. Hopefully we've launched you into the "I WANT MORE INFO" mode. If so we'll have links up soon just for you.

The more information you have before buying the better your total Home Stereo System will be.
