Should Have Personalization
Should Have Personalization
|
Basically there are 12 areas you need to touch on to make your game room ultimate. And those are ceiling, flooring, walls, lighting, games, furniture, music, decorations, food and snack storage, beverage storage, TV and bathroom.
Now you may have some other “Must Haves” for a game room design so please add your thoughts, ideas and opinions in the form below where visitors can read your ideas, comment on them and more.
Ceilings
Depending on where you’re creating your family room, rec room or gameroom you may need to add a ceiling especially if it’s in an unfinished basement. There are various ways to go about this, but always keep creativity and out of the box thinking in mind.
Some of your choices are drop down ceiling which is good for taller basements, they hide your plumbing and wires and look nice but can look outdated at times. You can get creative and add colored ceiling tiles or paint them yourself. Also you could get clear sections of tiles to change things up a bit.
Drywall ceilings are the cheapest by far but you’ll need to do some cutting and pasting to hide where the sheets come together. They mount flush for the most part but you’ll need help putting those up as they’re heavy or you can rent a machine that will life them for you from a place like Home Depot.
Black Out and White Out Ceilings are nice and for the most part simply to do. Basically you just paint your whole unfinished basement ceiling in black or white paint, including the wires, pipes, ducts and everything. These can look nice and they’re great for hanging up items, they work especially well in small basements to give you more space or perceived space.
Flooring
|
Another option is carpeting, but if you plan to have a lot of get-togethers plan on spills, carpet tiling may be better as you can replace squares instead of cutting up pieces where stains occur.
Hard Wood Flooring is for the most part a no-no in basements because of the humidity. If you have a nice humidifier then it may be ok or if your game room is in an above the ground room then no problems, just be careful of scratches that may happen when moving pool tables, juke boxes, pinball machines and other table games.
A cheaper option could be to paint your cement basement floor. Seal it then paint it with special cement paint and then use area rugs in places where kids might play or sitting areas. Again you can get creative with painting by using stencils for family names, favorite sports teams and more.
Walls
|
The paint job whether on a finished wall or cement walls can be simple yet look amazing. Doing a two-tone looks great. Use a dark color for the top 1 to 2 feet down then use a light color for the rest of the walls. Or do a traditional 36 inches up from the floor your dark color and the top portion your lighter colors. Use your favorite sports team for inspiration or a theme like Asian or Country Western to come up with some great color combinations.
Lighting
|
You can go with simple recessed lighting or track lighting, that works in most rooms. Also you’ll want to consider swag lamps and pub lamps for some atmosphere. Find ones with your favorite sports team logo or drink logo on them for added decoration. And for example if you have an Asian Theme then bamboo lanterns and paper lanterns in various colors or matching your wall colors is a must!
Using lighted palm trees, wall sconces, string lights, party lights, neon lights, black lights and many others types of lights is fun. A combination is the best way to go, just make sure they match the theme you’re going for and not to overdo the lighting. Heck even a disco ball would look awesome in the right theme.
Games
A Dart Board is also on the top of my list, especially a multi-player electronic dart board.
Pinball Machines are really fun, try to find a multiplayer game unless you like antique pinball games, multi-player games are usually more fun and more colorful and go perfect in an ultimate game room.
Video Game Systems like Nintendo Wii and Sony Play Station 3 are nice especially if you have teens in the house. Even Play Station 2 is great and you can find them cheap and used games are all around from EBAY to Gamestop.
Also Slot Machines are cool along with Pachinko and Pachislo from Japan make great gameroom games, they can be original and fun!
Lastly Board Games and Party Games are great to have on hand. Games like Taboo and Apples to Apples are always a hit, and a few decks of trivia cards on hand are fun. And make sure to have a couple kids board games too, whether it be candy land or chutes and ladders for an ultimate family room you need a couple on hand.
Furniture
|
Creating a home theater area with a couch is a great start, then add your billiard chairs for watching the game, stools for your pinball machines and bar stools for your portable home bar area. Besides than when it comes to seating it’s not that complicated, just match your theme.
For tables you’ll need a couple pub style tables for people to chat, drink and eat their pizza. A coffee style table for the home theater area and maybe a combination poker/dinner table for everyone else would also serve your room well. It all depends on room, that’s the key when it comes to furniture. If you have to go small then go small but to be ultimate you always need your game playing space!
And one nice game storage cabinet should always be on the list of game room furniture.
Adding Music
|
If you’re not a jukebox lover then a simple home stereo may do or maybe even a home theater and media room design setup is better for you than a jukebox or simple home stereo. You need to decide who’ll be using it, who’ll be visiting on party nights and how much you’ll use it.
My second favorite way to add music is with Sirius XM Satellite Radio. You have a large selection of music genres for people of all ages and a cool thing is that some cable companies and the Dish Network offer Sirius XM in their TV packages. All you need to do is set up some speakers, hard wired or wireless speakers and bam you have all the music you need.
Decorations
Food and Snack Storage
|
Also when it comes to food, an antique popcorn machine look great in game rooms also and larger ones have storage areas for popcorn and bags. Remember we’re working on ultimate game room designs! And a refrigerator is good to for frozen or foods that need to be kept fresh and cool.
