Finished Basement Ideas
Finished Basement Ideas can range from Game Rooms to Home Theatres to Billiard Rooms, Poker Rooms, Kids Game Rooms and more. And since many game rooms are located in the basement it’s only natural to have a section on this site dedicated to Finished Basement Ideas.
There are many things to consider when finishing a basement, from moisture and mold to natural light, to add walls or not, to various basement ceiling ideas and more. On this page you’ll find an introduction to basement finishing ideas and what things you should consider in order to create the basement game room you’ll always wanted.
Basement Waterproofing
Basement Waterproofing is very important for starting to finish your basement. If you don’t have a water problem, damp walls or moisture in your basement you may be ok. But it’s always good to make sure. If you’re in a new home I suggest waiting through winter and spring to see if melting snow seeps in before finishing your basement, if you live in warmer climates, wait for a few big rain storms to pass on by.
Basically before waterproofing your basement you need to know where the water is coming from? Is it coming from moisture built up in your basement causing your walls to get damp or is rain water draining towards your basement walls because your ground is sloping towards your home. Those problems are fixable when you know what’s causing your water problems and once that’s done you can start thinking about all your cool finished basement ideas.
Basement Flooring Options
This is important. Your basement flooring and basement floor plans depends on the type of game room you want to create. Do you want all carpet, if so think about the moisture in your basement and the get-together you’ll have. How about simple tiling? That’s one of my favorite ways to go, it’s simple, easy to clean and looks great. Or just painting your basement floor is another option.
Basement flooring can be done in many ways but you have to decide what practical for your room. Carpet, Tiles, Paint oh my!
Basement Insulation
Basement Wall Insulation and Basement Ceiling Insulation can be tricky. Basically your cement walls of the basement conduct the cold ground temperatures into your basement that’s why your basement is cool in the summer. When you decide to add insulation to your walls, if it’s not done right you may start to see moisture build-up on your finished walls or insulation itself which may result in mold and mildew. You must make sure your walls and basement is moisture free and be sure to seal the walls before attempting basement wall insulation.
Basement Ceiling Insulation is something different. You may not need it at all as it really won’t warm up the basement much at all but if you’re doing it to dampen sound then it may be a good idea.
Basement Dehumidifiers
Do your Finished Basement Ideas include a Basement Dehumidifier? You should consider them because in the heat of the summer basements feel cool yes but the humidity could cause a host of problems that a basement dehumidifier could fix. For example mildew and mold. Of course it won’t fix all the problems but they’re great to have for peace of mind.
Installing A Basement Bathroom
If you have the means and the room when it comes to home game rooms, installing a basement bathroom is a great idea. They’re great for parties, get-togethers and just for family use. If you’re basement has the plumbing installed in the basement already then you’re probably ready to get things started. If you don’t have plumbing it could be a headache but you can still have a bathroom added, you’ll need to call in a plumber to get some estimates and ideas on how it can be done. This may be expensive though but they’re worth considering especially when it comes to some creative finished basement ideas.
Glass Block Basement Windows
I’m a big fan of Glass Block Basement Windows. They’re great since they add security to your home and they keep your basement private all the while letting in natural light and outside air if you add vents, which I would do.
In the spring and summer it’s nice to air your basement game room and opening all the vents really brings in the fresh air. Also basements usually don’t have a lot of windows to glass block so it’s not a very expensive project most of the time. Get some quotes and shop around as there are always deals to be had and this is probably a must when it comes to finishing a basement.
Coming up with the perfect basement ceiling idea for your basement can be a chore. Do you want a drop down ceiling, drywall ceiling, blackout ceiling or whiteout ceiling? There are other options but those are popular. All have their good points and not so good points. Drop Down Ceilings look nice but you’ll lose space especially in a small basement. Drywall ceilings are nice too and cheap but it’ll be hard to get to your pipes and wiring if something goes wrong. Blackout and Whiteout ceilings, basically painting everything white or black, the joists and all look good, almost like a store ceiling, it’s cheap to do but may make your room look a little less unfinished but you can add some cool decorations to the ceiling like string lights, posters and more, now that’s unique.
Building A Basement Bar
When it comes to Finished Basement Ideas, Building a Basement Bar can be a really fun one. They’re not hard to do and there are kits available just for your needs. If not a kit then manuals and books on basement bar building are also available. Is a basement bar needed and will you use it is the real issue. Do you want to give up valuable game space for one? In my opinion having one is a good idea, it doesn’t have to be big, just for 3 people would be nice, the perfect size to sit and chat and have a drink while the game is on the big screen TV. Incorporate it in with the rest of your theme, give it a dedicated space all it’s own and it’ll look great.
