The Asteroids Arcade Game was a breakthrough in video games when it was introduced in 1979. An instant hit people all around the country has Asteroid fever.

I myself remember playing Asteroids at the airport as a kid and in the local game room. And when we saved enough money we bought the Atari 2600 version of Asteroids which was pretty darn good too.

So what about game play, well I like to say it’s basically a triangle with an attitude!

If you’re looking for a classic Asteroids Video Game for your home then you’re in luck. They are not that hard to find since so many were made. Of course since they came out in 1979 some are in better shape than others. Still they are relatively cheap and fun for a home game room.

The game play is pretty simple and if you didn’t grow up playing one or forgot how it was played here’s a little reminder.

Basically you’re a triangle/space ship that can rotate in circles, fly straight with thrusters with the push of a button and when you let go the thrusters stop and your ship slows down to a stop. You also have fire power, from the tip of your triangle ship you can fire shots upon large shaped asteroids.

When you hit a large shaped asteroid it breaks down into smaller asteroids and they move faster so when you destroy them you get more points. If any asteroid hits you then you’re destroyed.

Also as you advance through the stages, 12 to be exact, flying saucers would come out and fly across the screen shooting random or at you. You also had to take them out. And if you had no other choice you could send your ship into hyperspace. Meaning you’d disappear and reappear somewhere else on the screen. But beware sometimes you’d appear on an asteroid and explode.

And who can ever forget the heart pounding sound as you shoot more and more asteroids and as they move faster and faster. “Dump, Dump”, “Dump, Dump”, over and over, faster and faster. No wonder it was such a big hit.

Again it’s a great family fun game, simple to play and looks great in home game rooms, it’s a game for the ages.
