Also we added a USEFUL section on “Questions To Ask Yourself Before Buying” on the bottom of this page.
For example this Stiga Aerotech Table Tennis Table has a very "MODERN" look and feel. Perfect for a modern day game room!
Some Differences
The differences in table tennis tables aren’t much to the casual table tennis player. If you’re a pro then it’s a totally different story.
But for those of us who aren't pros, playing ping pong is just another great family game. Does the game have to be regulation size, width and height? Probably not.
Do you NEED the “regulation color” table tennis top? Did you know there was one? Most likely you won’t even care.
What you will care about is safety in the game room. Having enough space to play ping pong and having tons of fun!
Table Tennis Game Sizes
Most if not all ping pong game tables are the same size once opened up. There are some that are bigger and some that may be a little smaller but the tournament size and most table tennis game sizes are the following.
Height – 30 inches
Width - 60 inches
Length – 108 inches
If you noticed above we said, “opened up”. That is because now days just about every table tennis game can be folded up for EASY STORAGE. This feature really comes in handy if you have limited space in your game room.
When folded up for storage the size varies from ping pong table to ping pong table but here's the average storage size.
Average Fold Up Size:
Height – 65 inches
Width - 22 inches
Length – 66 inches
Just make sure you have enough space before buying the table tennis game. Otherwise you’ll be hitting walls with your paddle. It won’t only ruin the paddle but you may even injure yourself. A few feet of space on each side should be enough for the casual player.
Table Tennis Tables Colors & Designs
Colors
When it comes to the colors of a table tennis game you really don’t have a big choice.
Unlike foosball and air hockey games with all the bright neat designs, ping pong really only gives you three basic colors.
The three colors you’ll likely choose from is:
Green
Black
Blue/Tournament Blue
All the colors are rather sharp. And there is no “standard” table tennis color.
The color of the table tennis top you decide to go with will probably depend on your game room colors. Different manufacturers use different materials when making games so you may get a slight variance of each color above but nothing drastic.
Designs
Again pretty much all the designs are fairly the same. They do have some different types of leg supports like cross leg supports, but that's really about it.
The leg support issue will probably be a big deal if you or others have a habit of leaning on the table. A big no-no of course! But if you do hard shots and lean on the table then look for a table tennis game with extra leg support or cross leg supports.
Multi-Use Table
Some of the table tennis games also have this feature designed into them. Basically the two separate sides of the table come apart.
Each side has four leg supports, which enables it to be used in different ways.
For example each side can be used as a table itself. All you need to do is cover them with a tablecloth. Then you'd turn your table tennis game into a dinner/poker table or use it for holding drinks and chips at your next party.
This is a great feature especially if you don’t have room for both a table tennis game and a food/poker table in your basement.
Storage & Playback Positions
Most table tennis games now days have storage positions. This enables you to fold it up almost like a book and store it in the corner.
And since they just about all have wheels, it’s relatively easy to move it around your game room. TRULY A GREAT FEATURE!
A playback position feature is NOT found on every ping pong table though. What this feature does is allow you to stand one side up in order to play by yourself.
Indoor/Outdoor Table
There are differences in indoor and outdoor tables. Of course any table could be used indoors but not every table can be used outdoors.
An outdoor table is usually made of aluminum and has a weather resistant net and posts.
If you use an indoor table outdoors it’ll warp, discolor and eventually be ruined! If you even have a slight thought of playing outdoors then make sure you go with an all-weather outdoor ping pong table.
Conversion Table Tennis Game
A conversion table tennis game is a great option for your game room if you don’t have a lot of space.
Say you have a pool table and want a ping pong table also then this is the way to go.
A conversion table tennis game is one where you just have the table tennis top itself and you lay it over your pool table. It’ll have supports to hold it tight and they do play really well.
We had one of these in my home growing up and it did get plenty of use. We needed it since we didn’t have enough room for a full ping pong table.
Usually it’ll fit onto a 7 or 8-foot pool table. Remember to take the measurements before buying one.
Questions To Ask Yourself Before Buying
Besides the basics we’ve covered above there are a few other questions you need to ask yourself before buying.
This list will help you on your way to finding the perfect table for you and your family.
- Are the ping pong table legs adjustable?
Check to see if the outer legs have leg adjusters on them. This feature will come in handy.
- Does the table have a storage compartment?
Some tables have a side storage bag for paddles and balls.
- Are there pads on the table corners?
This way you won’t get caught on the table and it will save people/children from getting hurt on sharp corners.
- Can you adjust the net tension?
- Does the table come with a net and paddles?
- Does the ball bounce nicely and evenly on the tabletop surface?
Difference surfaces do play differently.
This list may not cover every question you have. Still they are enough to start you in the right direction to finding the perfect table tennis game.
