The Vintage 78s Are Still Amazing!
The 78 rpm Juke Box was really the only jukebox available until the early 1950s. But it was great then and is still great now for home game rooms.
Why Did The 78s Fade Away
For a couple reasons.
One is that they could only play up to 50 records. Most actually played around 20. Also they usually only played one side and you changed sides manually.
Also the older 78 records themselves would shatter if dropped. You had to be very careful when handling those records.
Here you have three good reasons that may persuade you to avoid 78rpm Juke Boxes.
ON THE OTHER HAND
I grew up with a 1946 Rockola in my house. We had a lot of 78-rpm records that my dad collected over the years. Yes they broke and chipped sometimes but was that Rockola worth it or what.
Those classic songs added an amazing atmosphere to our home game room. They were all from the 1930s and 1940s. Catchy, fun and entertaining truly explains what it's like listening to them.
And still to this day find myself humming those old tunes. Of course none of my friends really appreciated them when they were younger. But they do now!
Like most older juke boxes our Rockola only held 20 records. But it didn't matter. My parents grew up with the 78s, it was what they knew and enjoyed.
After all having a nice 78-rpm Rockola, Wurlitzer or Seeburg in your game room gives it a little more class and atmosphere.
Don't be afraid of not finding 78rpm records. You can find them anywhere from internet auctions to rummage sales. And they're usually not expensive at all.

- Bulky
- Usually only play one side of a record.
- Records easily chip or break.

- Sound quality. (Depends on the box and size of your game room).
- Record needles may be VERY HARD to find.
